At the foot of the Col du Télégraphe...
St Martin d'Arc is the smallest commune in the canton of St Michel de Maurienne.
Situated at the crossroads of the Maurienne valley and the Col du Télégraphe, St Martin d'Arc comprises the main town and two hamlets. Its former agricultural vocation no longer represents much today, and activity is closely linked to that of St Michel.
Zoom
Dominating the commune of St Martin d'Arc and the entire valley, the Fort du Télégraphe stands to the north of the pass. Built between 1888 and 1890, it was completed in 1908 with low batteries to take advantage of the extraordinary view it affords. Its name comes from a relay of Chappe's optical telegraph: like telegraphers, mountain artillerymen needed to see far.
